The Hutton Settlement: A Home for One Man’s Family Book by Doris. H. Pieroth

The Hutton Settlement: A Home for One Man’s Family by the late Doris H. Pieroth is the history of our unique venture, beginning with the story of Levi Hutton himself, his rise to riches, and the construction of the home’s impressive buildings and pastoral campus. It reflects eighty years of change in theory and practice of child care, during which the Progressive Era beliefs held by the initial trusees endured and sustained Hutton’s vision. The book is based on the Settlement’s official records and draws on press accounts as well as interviews with past and present trustees, administrators, staff and many former residents who grew to adulthood in its safe haven. The author covers from Levi’s early days in the 1860’s to the book’s publishing in 2003.
