What an incredible Earth Day we had this year! Kids, staff and community volunteers joined forces to bring Hutton’s garden expansion project to fruition (see what we did there?). Thanks to a generous grant from Gesa Credit Union, we were able to create a food forest, filled with berry bushes, fruit trees, an herb garden and an expandion to our chicken coop to add ducks!
Our goal at Hutton is to create a self-sustaining garden, where no pesticides or fertilizers are used – ducks and chickens are GREAT for pest control! The children are learning to grow from seed, harvest their food, cook meals with the food that they grew and so much more. They also give back to the community by donation a portion of each years crops to local charities, so they can learn to take care of their neighbors just as they take care of themselves.
We also had a group from the United States Air Force out in the afternoon, building and painting the duck pen and helping with the expansion project! What an incredible show of support from our community members and the kids worked hard the whole day!
Here are some photos from Earth Day!
